Driver cited for open intoxicants in US-41 crash

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Only minor injuries are reported in a two-vehicle crash on US-41 in Marquette Township Thursday.

The Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened around 4:10 p.m. at Brickyard Road.  Deputies say an SUV driven by Whitney Stanley, 30, of Gwinn turned left onto the highway toward Brickyard Road and into the path of an eastbound pickup driven by John Kovarik, 28, of Negaunee.

Kovarik’s passenger, Dane Bays, 40, of Marquette, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and sought his own treatment.

Stanley was cited for failure to yield and transporting open intoxicants.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
