ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI-- The Department of Natural Resources and Ontonagon County Road Commission are teaming up to protect the shoreline along the east access road to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Work began in August to place boulders between County Road 107 and Lake Superior. Recent violent storms have eroded unprotected areas of shoreline. DNR officials say about 80 percent of the 1.6-mile stretch of affected county road has less than 20 feet of shoreline between the lake’s edge and the road.
The DNR is using excavators and large ballast rocks to extend the armoring project past the point where it ended in the summer. Work will continue until the weather forces officials to stop.
