Marquette County mines intend to remain customers of Presque Isle plant

MARQUETTE, MI--   WE Energies has officially asked the Midwestern grid operator—MISO—to terminate System Support Resource payments for the Presque Isle Power Plant.

Utilities across the Upper Peninsula have been paying extra to keep the plant running after the Empire and Tilden mines dropped WE Energies as their power supplier.  The mines have since returned to the Wisconsin utility, under a series of agreements that includes the sale of the plant to Upper Peninsula Power Company this year.  WE Energies wanted the payments terminated retroactive to February 1—only if the mines agreed to remain customers.

Tuesday officials said the mines have committed to remaining full-requirements customers until either the sale of the plant is completed or July 31, whichever comes first.

MISO has not yet responded.
