Meth fire injures Marquette Township man

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Marquette Township man was injured in what police are calling a meth fire.

Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team were requested to assist troopers from the Negaunee Post at Whetstone Apartments. Troopers who arrived first at the scene determined a man was trying to manufacture meth when a chemical reaction started a fire in the bathroom of his apartment.

The suspect sustained burns and was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

The Marquette Township Fire Department put out the fire, which caused only minor damage to the bathroom.

Since meth-related components were found in the suspect’s apartment, residents in the entire building were evacuated. They weren’t allowed back until the Marquette County Health Department approved it.

The incident remains under investigation.
