NWF says too many oil spills under Enbridge

MARSHALL, MI (AP)--   An environmental group says the company whose ruptured pipeline dumped 800,000 gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River in 2010 has a long history of spills.

Wednesday is the second anniversary of the rupture in the pipeline, which runs from Griffith, Indiana to Sarnia, Ontario.

The National Wildlife Federation says Enbridge, Inc. had 804 pipeline spills in 1999-2010, releasing a combined 6.8 million gallons of oil. Federation Senior Vice President Jeremy Symons says mistakes and bad luck can't explain the high number, and he criticizes the Canadian company's safety record.

The federation proposes regulation of pipelines used to transport heavy tar sands oil, which it says causes more wear and tear than conventional oil. The National Academy of Sciences is investigating that issue.
