Classiclectic Connection: Marquette Symphony's 2019-2020 Season Announced

Marquette Monthly

MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Symphony Orchestra has announced its concert lineup for the 2019-2020 season.

MSO board president Andrew LaCombe says the orchestra enters the new season with great momentum. During the inaugural season under Principal Conductor Octavio Más-Arocas, the MSO sold out two concerts, nearly sold out another and collaborated with several community organizations for the first time.

“There’s true excitement and buzz in the community about the MSO,” said LaCombe.

The 2019-2020 Marquette Symphony Orchestra Season:

Saturday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. – The MSO will begin the year with the Brahms Double Concerto, performed by violinist Scott Flavin and cellist Ross Harbaugh of the Bergonzi Trio. These names may be familiar because they are frequent performers in the Pine Mountain Music Festival. This concert will also include Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and David Little’s Haunted Topography.

Saturday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. – The MSO is dedicated to furthering music education opportunities, so the orchestra has invited the Marquette Senior High School Symphony Orchestra for a side-by-side performance for the first time. Together the orchestras will perform Finlandia by Sibelius and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. The MSO will also play Franck’s Symphony in D minor.

Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. – The annual Sounds of the Holidays concert returns. This has become a community tradition.

Saturday, February 22 at 3:00 p.m. – The MSO is having its annual pops concert at a family-friendly time. This will feature the new Sing with the Symphony! competition, where up to five finalists from Marquette County will have a chance to be featured. Details on how to enter the contest are at MarquetteSymphony.org. The children’s choir from the Halloween Spooktacular will also return.

Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. – The season finale will feature the Youth Concerto Competition winner, violinist Christine Harada Li of Ann Arbor, performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. The MSO is also collaborating for the first time with the NMU Choir to perform Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region. The MSO will also play Argo by Emily Cooley.

NMU’s ticket office is now processing season ticket renewals and new season ticket orders. Individual concert tickets will go on sale starting Aug. 12.
