TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has $9.5 million to distribute for Great Lakes projects and is looking for takers.
EPA's regional office in Chicago says it's soliciting grant proposals from states, cities, Native American tribes, universities and nonprofit groups.
The money comes from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, an Obama administration program to clean up and protect the lakes from a variety of threats.
Regional program manager Susan Hedman says this round of funding will be used for projects that reduce exposure to toxic substances from fish consumption, control invasive species and improve water quality.
Congress has appropriated more than $1 billion for the initiative and Obama is asking for more.
