Marquette trying to find ways to recycle glass

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette is taking public input and formulating ideas for recycling glass.

City Commissioner Sarah Reynolds says there hasn’t been a large market for glass in the state, but

environmentally conscious residents want to recycle. She says the city has come up with three main approaches regarding glass.

“One would be we set up some kind of containers around town where people can still recycle their glass; option two is that it would be about a dollar a month on the water bill for residents if we wanted to recycle; the next option is what some refer to as the 'nuclear option,' which is we no longer go with the Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority and we go with a different hauler,” she says.

Reynolds says City Manager Mike Angeli will develop a proposal and present it to the commission for a vote. She urges residents to continue to let commissioners know how they feel about the issue.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
