Northern Arts & Culture: Songbird Creative, a "little bird" company about creativity
A discussion with Moiré Embley, Songbird Creative Managing Director & Creator
The doors of creativity swing open when someone is encouraged and feels safe.
Creativity is at the core of Songbird Creative, a "little bird" company which encourages creativity, self-expression and mental fitness in older adults. The company was created by Moiré Embley (Songbird Creative Managing Director & Creator), who was inspired to take her experience in arts programming for older adults and offer an outlet so they can use their authentic voices.
Moiré has experience in arts programming for older adults with training in Art Therapy, and is currently the Program Director of the Senior Theatre Experience for the City of Marquette. Through this experience, she developed writing prompts, that, when answered by the participating adult, allow an outlet for creativity. The resulting letter is an exercise in cognitive function, memory recall, critical thinking and communication.
Among other benefits, the letters can also be shared (with the writer's permission) as a way to practice vocal expression, through poetry, storytelling, and spoken word (including The Songbird Creative Podcast).
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Moiré about Songbird Creative:
The Songbird Creative Podcast is another branch of the company, with the pilot episode available now, and plans in 2022 to produce more episodes that follow the Songbird Letter literary theme. The productions also feature music of local musician, Kerry Yost.
