Marquette Choral Society presents "Transcendence" on December 16th and 17th

A discussion with music director Dr. Erin Colwitz

This December, the Marquette Choral Society will perform "Transcendence," a concert featuring symphonic choral pieces celebrating life and peace.

The concert will feature two choral masterworks; Tarik O'Regan's Martyr and Joseph Haydn's Mass in a Time of War. Dr. Erin Colwitz will direct the ensemble on December 16th and 17th, 2023, in the Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette, Michigan. The concert will be recorded and featured on Public Radio 90 during a special edition of Peninsula Performances on Friday, December 22nd at 8 pm EST.

Tarik O'Regan's Martyr was commissioned in 2008 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of St. Albans Chamber Choir in England. The composition was intended to be a complement to Haydn's 'Nelson' Mass. Following the performance of Martyr, Haydn's Mass in Time of War, also known as Missa in tempore belli, will be performed. This piece was composed in 1796 during the European war that took place after the French Revolution. Haydn's goal in creating this work was to incorporate elements of anti-war sentiment.

Later in December, the choir will present an all-ages carol sing-along at Messiah Lutheran Church.
