SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A Sault Ste. Marie man has been arrested on multiple felonies related to the manufacture of child pornography.

Detectives from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office say the initial crimes occurred outside of the city but within Chippewa County.

Investigation led to the execution of a search warrant Wednesday at a residence on Tweed Street. Duane Forrest, 47, was arrested and charged with the following:

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   One person died in a shooting incident in Chippewa County Thursday.

Sheriff’s deputies were booking a drunk driving suspect just before midnight when they received a 911 call reporting gunshots at a Soo Township apartment complex. Border Patrol and Sault Tribal Police arrived at the scene first and heard additional shots.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Authorities are looking for an absconder out of Chippewa County.

The Sheriff’s Office says Tara Jo Horka, 30, of Sault Ste. Marie reported to her probation officer on Friday. Deputies say when things were not going her way Horka left and has not been seen since.

Two arrest warrants have been issued for Horka: absconding from supervision and being a habitual offender.

STRONGS, MI--   A woman who got lost hiking in Chippewa County has been found safe. 

Thursday around 5:35 p.m. Central Dispatch received a call from a man who said his 30-year-old girlfriend was lost in the woods near M-28 east of Strongs.  He said he’d dropped her off around 2:45 p.m. so she could to hiking on the North Country Trail. The man said he received a text from her saying she was lost.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   A Pickford teen has been killed in a rollover crash in Chippewa County. 

Sheriff’s officials say it happened Saturday around 3:50 a.m. on M-48 near Hanna Road. A vehicle driven by Joshua Goodell, 18, drifted off the side of the roadway and hit a culvert, which launched it into the air for 132 feet. Goodell was found trapped inside.

Goodell was taken to the hospital, where he passed away early Monday morning.

Officials say speed appears to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

KINCHELOE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Chippewa County man has been arrested on torture and criminal sexual conduct charges after human remains were discovered at a home.

Undersheriff Greg Postma says, after a lengthy investigation, deputies conducted a search warrant Wednesday on Erin Place in Kincheloe Township. Officers were directed to look for human remains and other items of interest. Postma says remains were found and secured for the medical examiner’s analysis.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   One of Chippewa County’s most wanted criminals has been arrested in Tennessee.

Sheriff Mike Bitnar says Joseph Ellsworth is wanted on seven felony warrants out of Chippewa and Mackinac counties. The warrants are for home invasion, multiple counts of breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property, and receiving stolen property. He’s accused of breaking into area churches and stealing money from them.

Arrangements are being made to bring Ellsworth back to the U.P. to face criminal charges.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The Chippewa County Sheriff’s office says a drug and forgery suspect has cut his tether and left the area.

Deputies say Jeremy Marjamaa was originally arrested on meth-related charges, forgery, and uttering and publishing. A judge allowed Marjamaa to be released on a tether, but on Sunday he cut the tether and fled.

Witnesses say an older couple picked Marjamaa up. It’s unknown in the couple knowingly assisted in his escape.

Officials say Marjamaa is from the west end of the Upper Peninsula and may be headed in that direction.

BAY MILLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Sault Ste. Marie man is lodged in the Chippewa County Jail following a single-vehicle rollover accident in Bay Mills Township.

Sheriff’s deputies were called Sunday around 8:40 p.m. to Lake Shore Drive near Monocle Lake Road. They say a vehicle had left the roadway, hit some trees and a sign and flipped onto its roof.

The driver, David Seppala, 21, was arrested for operating while impaired.

Officers believe speed was also a factor in the accident.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The TRI-county Drug Enforcement Team arrested two men during an investigation into the sale of heroin and cocaine in Sault Ste. Marie last week.

Tri-Dent detectives had a motel under surveillance in the early morning hours of May 10 when they saw Andre Hudak leave on a motorcycle. Officers from the Sault Police Department tried to stop Hudak, who took off. The motorcycle crashed after a short distance and Hudak attempted to run before he was caught.
