SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   One of Chippewa County’s most wanted criminals has been arrested in Tennessee.

Sheriff Mike Bitnar says Joseph Ellsworth is wanted on seven felony warrants out of Chippewa and Mackinac counties. The warrants are for home invasion, multiple counts of breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property, and receiving stolen property. He’s accused of breaking into area churches and stealing money from them.

Arrangements are being made to bring Ellsworth back to the U.P. to face criminal charges.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The Chippewa County Sheriff’s office says a drug and forgery suspect has cut his tether and left the area.

Deputies say Jeremy Marjamaa was originally arrested on meth-related charges, forgery, and uttering and publishing. A judge allowed Marjamaa to be released on a tether, but on Sunday he cut the tether and fled.

Witnesses say an older couple picked Marjamaa up. It’s unknown in the couple knowingly assisted in his escape.

Officials say Marjamaa is from the west end of the Upper Peninsula and may be headed in that direction.

BAY MILLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Sault Ste. Marie man is lodged in the Chippewa County Jail following a single-vehicle rollover accident in Bay Mills Township.

Sheriff’s deputies were called Sunday around 8:40 p.m. to Lake Shore Drive near Monocle Lake Road. They say a vehicle had left the roadway, hit some trees and a sign and flipped onto its roof.

The driver, David Seppala, 21, was arrested for operating while impaired.

Officers believe speed was also a factor in the accident.

Bay Mills EMS/Fire and Central Dispatch assisted at the scene.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The TRI-county Drug Enforcement Team arrested two men during an investigation into the sale of heroin and cocaine in Sault Ste. Marie last week.

Tri-Dent detectives had a motel under surveillance in the early morning hours of May 10 when they saw Andre Hudak leave on a motorcycle. Officers from the Sault Police Department tried to stop Hudak, who took off. The motorcycle crashed after a short distance and Hudak attempted to run before he was caught.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The names of those involved in a fatal crash in Chippewa County have been released.

It happened Monday around 2:20 a.m. on northbound I-75 near 6 Mile Road. Deputies say Kole Rabb, 22, of Kalamazoo was driving and may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The vehicle hit the median and rolled several times.

Rabb was taken to War Memorial Hospital, where he remains with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The passenger in the vehicle, Stacy Lynn Hough, 27, was killed in the crash.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Northbound I-75 in Chippewa County is reopen, following a fatal crash this morning.

Around 2:20 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene near 6 Mile Road. Early reports indicate a young Kalamazoo man was driving and may have fallen asleep. The vehicle drove into the median and rolled over multiple times.

The passenger—a young Sault Ste. Marie female—did not survive.

I-75 was closed for about three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

No names are being released at this time.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in connection with a fatal accident on I-75 in January.

On the evening of January 10 a small car left the road just north of Gaines Highway. It struck a reflector pole and became stuck in the snow. Investigation revealed the driver and all three passengers had been drinking.

Two of the passengers—wearing dark-colored clothing—began walking southbound in the traffic lane of I-75. A southbound pickup truck struck the two, killing one and injuring the other.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Two men have been charged in connection with the abduction of a child in Chippewa County Wednesday.

The Sheriff’s Office says George Cunningham, 53, and Jon Stygler, 68, were arraigned Thursday on charges of kidnapping, assault, home invasion, and child endangerment. Officials say additional charges may be added.

PARADISE, MI--   A 5-year-old boy has been found safe, after he was abducted from a Paradise home by two men Wednesday night. 

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says an Amber Alert was issued for Zephaniau George Cunningham, who was last seen by witnesses shortly after 7 pm at a home on Whitefish Point Road.

One of the suspects, George Stephen Cunningham, was out on parole after his conviction in Ohio for gross sexual imposition with a victim under 13. He allegedly cut off his GPS tether.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   An Ohio man was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident in Chippewa County on Friday. 

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened around 3:30 p.m. on Trail #8 just east of Salt Point Road.

Investigation revealed the driver lost control of the snowmobile. It left the trail and drove into deep, powder-like snow, then was pulled into some trees.

The driver was taken to War Memorial Hospital by Bay Mills EMS. He was later transferred to a hospital downstate with life-threatening injuries.
