MCMILLAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Newberry Detachment are investigating the theft of fishing gear from a boat.

The vessel was left tied up on the Fox River near M-28 in McMillan Township Saturday around 4:30 p.m. When the owner returned Sunday around 7 p.m. he found someone had taken a Mercury 6 hp outboard motor, an additional propeller, tackle boxes and lures, anchors and two paddles.

Anyone with information related to the theft is asked to call Trooper Thompson at 906-632-2217.

MUNISING TOWNSHIP, MI--   Three people are seriously injured, following a car-semi crash in Alger County.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Wednesday around 8:30 p.m. on M-28 near Star Siding Road in Munising Township. Preliminary investigation indicates the passenger car and semi tractor-trailer were both westbound when the car pulled over near the intersection of Star Siding Road. The driver of the car then attempted a U-turn and drove into the path of the semi.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post arrested multiple people on drug charges Wednesday. 

Around noon a trooper conducted a traffic stop on Seymour Street near 4th Avenue. Following an investigation a 25-year-old St. Ignace man was arrested for possession of an analogue and a 25-year-old St. Ignace woman was arrested for possession of meth.

PENTLAND TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police are looking for a suspect after someone reported a shot fired from a vehicle in Luce County.

Troopers were informed Saturday around 6 p.m. of the incident, which happened on M-117 near M-28 in Pentland Township. Someone fired a firearm—possibly a rifle—from inside a stationary vehicle into the woods.

The vehicle is described as a black, four-door, 2010-to-present Chevy Silverado. All four windows are tinted. The vehicle has no license plate, damage to the tailgate, shiny paint on the rear, and a Chevrolet symbol on the grill.

BERGLAND TOWNSHIP, MI--   A St. Ignace man suffered minor injuries in a crash in Ontonagon County Wednesday. 

Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post say it happened around 9:10 a.m. at the intersection of M-28 and M-64. When troopers arrived they found Jonathan Kamyszek, 34, walking on the shoulder of the road. He said he’d been northbound on M-64 when he fell asleep. He awoke when he crossed M-28. His pickup truck crashed into a wooded area and drove about 50 feet into the tree line.

CHRISTMAS, MI--   An Alger County man has been arrested by Michigan State Police for multiple felonies related to meth. 

On Saturday troopers from the Negaunee Post conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for improper lane driving on M-28 near Christmas. The 28-year-old driver showed signs of being under the influence of an intoxicating substance. Investigation led to the driver’s arrest for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.

WAKEFIELD, MI--   One person was killed in a traffic crash in Wakefield over the weekend.

Saturday around 5:45 p.m. Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post responded to M-28 near Jack Spur Road.

Troopers say Philip Wirtanen, 75, of Merriweather was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, Anthony Beinhorn, 24, of Shakopee, Minnesota, was treated for minor injuries at Aspirus Grandview.

State Police say Wirtanen had a medical condition that likely was a factor in the crash.

STRONGS, MI--   A woman who got lost hiking in Chippewa County has been found safe. 

Thursday around 5:35 p.m. Central Dispatch received a call from a man who said his 30-year-old girlfriend was lost in the woods near M-28 east of Strongs.  He said he’d dropped her off around 2:45 p.m. so she could to hiking on the North Country Trail. The man said he received a text from her saying she was lost.

MARQUETTE, MI--   An NMU fraternity member hit by a vehicle during a charity event November 2 faces a long recovery time.

WLUC-TV reports Leo Maiorana is a 23-year-old sophomore and a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was pushing a bathtub along M-28 near Shelter Bay as a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital when a car hit a safety vehicle behind him. Maiorana was struck by the safety vehicle and thrown from the scene.  

CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP, MI--   Chippewa County’s Sheriff has suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash in Chippewa Township. 

Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post say it happened Saturday around 7:10 p.m. on M-28 near Salt Point Road. An eastbound vehicle driven by Paul Sitz of Ramsey, Minnesota crossed the centerline and tried to turn into a parking lot. It pulled into the path of a westbound vehicle driven by Sheriff Michael Bitnar of Rudyard, who was off-duty at the time.
