HANCOCK, MI--   Two people had to be extricated from their car, following a two-vehicle crash in Hancock Thursday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 11:50 a.m. at Campus Drive and US-41. A Buick driven by 83-year-old Barbara Holmes of Kent, Washington failed to yield at the intersection at Campus Drive. She tried to make a left turn onto US-41 and hit a southbound car driven by 67-year-old Cecelia Erickson of Hancock.

CALUMET TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person has died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident in Calumet Sunday.

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was taken to the hospital following a head-on collision in Negaunee Township.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to US-41 at Pond Road. Deputies say a 53-year-old Marquette man was westbound on the highway when the utility trailer he was pulling separated from his truck. The trailer crossed the median and hit an eastbound Buick driven by a 31-year-old Negaunee Township woman head-on. The car left the roadway and came to rest against a trailer that was parked on the lawn of Window Outfitters.

SKANDIA, MI--   One person was taken to the hospital following a multiple-vehicle crash in Skandia Wednesday.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. on US-41 South near Yalmer Road. A 70-year-old woman driving a Crown Victoria southbound was stopped on the highway and waiting to turn left into a parking lot. Her vehicle was hit from behind by a PT Cruiser driven by a 23-year-old Wilson woman.

The Crown Victoria was pushed into the ditch on the east side of the highway. The PT Cruiser then collided with an unoccupied Toyota Tundra that was parked on the west shoulder of the highway.

HOUGHTON, MI--   The spring road work season begins in Houghton County Monday.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is replacing culverts on M-26 and US-41. About $1 million will go toward replacing one over Umbrella Tree Creek west of Goat Hill Road on M-26. Work also includes asphalt paving, installing a guardrail and pavement markings. The project is expected to be completed in late July.

BARAGA COUNTY, MI--   The Michigan Department of Transportation starts work on a section of US-41 in Baraga County Tuesday.

About 4.5 miles of the highway from Pine Street in Three Lakes to east of Tioga Creek will be rebuilt. Work includes rebuilding asphalt pavement, an aggregate grade lift, installing concrete curbs and gutters, culverts, and drainage, guardrail repairs and pavement markings. 

Officials estimate the project will be completed in September.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the City of Houghton will hold a hybrid virtual public meeting to discuss the 2021-2022 US-41 (Townsend Drive and College Avenue) rebuilding project in Houghton. This meeting immediately precedes a regular Houghton City Council meeting. People can attend in person or participate on Microsoft Teams. There will be a short presentation at 5 p.m. followed by a question-and-answer period.

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI--   An Ohio snowmobiler was killed when he drove in front of a vehicle in Houghton County Friday. 

BARAGA TOWNSHIP, MI--   Injuries are reported from a two-vehicle accident in Baraga County Wednesday.

Sheriff’s deputies responded around 8 a.m. to US-41 near Selkey Road in Baraga Township. It appeared a southbound pickup truck lost control in poor weather, crossed the centerline and was struck by a northbound SUV.

All five occupants of the pickup were taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, as was the driver of the SUV. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
